Hi I’m Melissa!

I enjoy a good long walk, cooking (and eating) and being snowed in. I'm a homeschooling mom to 4 boys ages 14, 11, 8 and 5. Join me here for encouragement, ideas and sharing why I love the Great State of Maine.

We are going away soon and our very generous neigh We are going away soon and our very generous neighbors will tend our animals and keep an eye on the house. I always find it hard to show our appreciation in this situation. Do I hand them cash? How much? Do I get them a gift of some sort? They will keep the eggs that are laid while we are gone so with current egg prices, that's pretty awesome. I made up a batch of overnight cinnamon rolls from @jenschmidt_beautyandbedlam. They'll go in the freezer until we get home. I'll bake them off in the morning a day or two after we get back and bring them over fresh from the oven. That's my plan, and I'm sticking to it!

How do you show appreciation and/or compensate when you go away and someone watches your livestock?

I made the decision to put a light on in our coop. I have always leaned toward the school of thought that their body is made to take a break in the winter. The price of eggs, the amount of nutrition they offer, and some other factors led me to the decision. It wasn't an easy decision. I did a lot of research so for now this is the plan. I have the timer start to turn the light on in the morning rather than at night. I want them to have the gradual decrease in daylight at the end of the day. I learned that chickens don't see well in the dark so for the light to just turn off could lead them to stumbling to get to the roost. I will start the light gradually increasing the time over the next few days. The light Im using is NOT a heat lamp. Thats an entirely different discussion for a different day This will be a learning experience for sure!
