Last week my parents Mr1 and Mr4 and I took a drive to Mt Vernon, Maine to DEW Haven Maine Zoo and Animal Rescue. It was a beautiful, fall-ish day and the drive was gorgeous through the Belgrade Lakes area. We walked through entrance and saw animals just down the path. The first ones we enjoyed were these deer and some goats. I purchased a bucket of feed to share with the animals. When we paid admission the staff member told me which animals could have feed and couldn’t. Thankfully there was very clear signage saying who could be fed and not. I didn’t want to be that person who fed the wrong animals the wrong feed!

We continued walking the path and saw the tortoise, chickens and wallaby. The habitats had a nice amount of information about each animal. Not too much to read while kids bounced around to each animal but enough so you knew where they originated from and some other basic facts.

Exotic birds, a camel, and of course the lions and tigers where a highlight as well. The path finishes with the monkeys which are a blast to watch. They were smart to put benches opposite these habitats so folks could take a little rest and sit and enjoy the show the monkeys put on.
Admission was a budget friendly price, enough to want to stay and make the drive worth it but not so much you felt like the trip was wasted if the kids just ran right through. That’s how a budget friendly Mama thinks:-) There are no bathrooms but portable toilets in the parking lot and there is a nice hand washing station at the end of the park. Parking can be tight but they have a second parking lot just down the road a short bit. Staff was welcoming and friendly, we’ll definitely go back!
