Celebrate Easter During Quarantine

The church pews may be empty but so is the grave. We can still celebrate the resurrection and I am so grateful!

Easter is a big deal for our family. Though it is a different celebration than Christmas it is at the same level of excitement and honor for us. Typically we enjoy a big breakfast with our church family followed by a church service. We are all dressed as coordinated as I can manage it and almost always attempt a family photos of all 6 of us either at home or at church. After church we either host or go to a family meal and visit for the day.

This year is quite different for everyone. I am comforted to know that EVERYONE is effected by our current events. It’s not just something we are seeing in the news, it’s not a snowstorm that only New England is coping with. What is typically a day celebrated with family and fellow believers, songs of worship, special occasion food and even gifts and flowers will look different for most. Everyone is managing how to observe and celebrate Easter while being quarantined.

This is how our family is anticipating our Easter 2020 celebration:

Resurrection Eggs-

We have had these eggs since Mr1 was a toddler. Often it has worked out best to open and discuss a couple of eggs each day leading up to Easter. This little set has a wonderful explanation and scriptural reference for children.

Storybook Bible-

Our read aloud time will include this beautifully written and illustrated book.

Resurrection rolls and dying eggs-

This simple object lesson and treat are always so fun and I try to print out an explanation or use the Storybook Bible story so that while I’m working with one of the boys on the food another of my boys who can read, shares with us what and why we are doing.

Easter “baskets” –

I dont do baskets but have a small gift for the boys when they wake up. I have strong feelings about gifts and huge baskets for Easter. Easter is about one gift, the resurrection of Jesus. We usually gift items that are things they would need anyway. I often get them a new pair of crocs for spring time, a book and a chocolate. This year none of them need crocs so I may just go with a book and chocolate.

Church-

Whatever our home church is offering for service is what we will plan our day around. We will get dressed and enjoy service in the living room. It’s amazing that even though we aren’t in the building, knowing that our church family is also gathered together around their tv, computer, or digital device they are singing the same songs and praising God just like we are. It is different but still refreshing and uplifting.

Special occasion dinner-

If I cant find a ham at a good price locally I will prepare a turkey dinner. I picked up a couple of turkeys at a very good price during the holidays and will make mashed potatoes, rolls and a veggie side dish. Perhaps a cheesecake for dessert. If you dont have a traditional centerpiece dish for your meal, use what you have. Set the table, light some candles and use your fancy plates. It’s not just the food that goes in our bellies that makes a meal special.

Call or video chat with family-

This is typically a day spent with family so if we cant be all together we will aim to connect with as many of them as possible with the help of technology.
