To read more about how my garden is growing this season check out my past Garden Journals from this season:
Welcome to my garden! We have had a very wet start to the growing season. After last years lack of rain it’s nice but my garden and I could use some more sunny days! The forecast keeps saying rain for several days and then switches the day of so while we cant plan for some things I will take the sunny days. Here is how things are growing.
Sugar snap peas
For the future I need to make a better plan for trellessing but overall these Sugar Ann Sugar Snap Peas are doing well. We have harvested 2-3 times and snacks are just so much better when it’s straight from the garden!
Onions
Working to keep these rows weeded but theses little plants are growing strong and starting to put on some size.
Carrots
Though carrots like consistent moisture the rain made it hard for them to germinate. My first row is struggling a bit but it’s coming up. I just put in a second planting.
Beets
Another one struggling with the rain. I planted another row and will hope for the best
Broccoli
My seeds did not like the rain but the seedlings I bought in Northern Maine are settling in nicely.
Cauliflower
I hadnt planned to grow cauliflower but the six packs at the green house were too tempting when I was buying the prior mentioned broccoli.
Garlic
Scapes are up! I’ll give them a few more days and harvest them all.
Tomatoes
These plants are really begging for sun but they are holding on. The straw I put down to keep weeds down and protect the plant from splash on the leaves is actually seeding so I have more weeding to do unfortunately. They are growing enough for me to start weaving them soon.
Cucumbers
These poor plants are just starting to take off a bit. I had to replant 2 spots as the rain and cool temps took them out. The new seeds just sprouted so hopefully the rain on the forecast don’t kill them.
Pumpkins
I made a makeshift area for pumpkins away from the main garden a bit. Last year I planted them smack in the middle of the garden and they took over. I’m hoping the landscape fabric kills off the grass and we get some pumpkins. The seeds took a while to germinate but they are up now!
Butternut squash and Birdhouse gourd
Some are thriving some are struggling but we’ll keep a close eye and hope to see the archway full of plants soon!
Beans
It’s so odd the fact that one side of the arch the seedlings are eaten down much like last year and on the other side they are thriving. I replanted a few seeds on the sad side and hope to fill the arch with beans.
Zucchini
My two little plants are slowly but surely growing. I’m hoping the tomato cages are good options for supports.
Strawberries
I don’t think I’ve ever tasted such delicious strawberries! We picked roughly a quart or so today and there are lots more ripening up! I’m working on training the runners to fill in some open spots in the bed and I may even create a new bed to have more plants.
Lettuce/Spinach/Kale
The first planting of spinach went gone to seed but we had several harvests from it. I planted a second planting of spinach and red lettuce under the trellis I set up for the cucumbers. My plan is that the cukes will grow up the fencing and create shade for the lettuce and spinach underneath. The kale is growing strong with their beautiful purple veins.
Flowers
It’s peony season and I’m LOVING it! I cannot get over these gorgeous flowers! The honeysuckle, as we walk under our deck, is in full show and smells heavenly. The poppies are also showing their beautiful delicate selves. My climbing hydrangea may give us blooms for the first time in a long time. I fertilized it in the early spring and it’s enjoying all of the rain. I’m also plopping sunflowers everywhere I can find.
I’m working on tasking the boys with some weeding. At this point we watch and wait! Thanks so much for stopping by and seeing what’s growing!
