Welcome to the jungle! Things are growing and it is wonderful. We have had some rain and though it bruised out July 4th cookout plans our plants (and this gardener) loved it.
Pumpkins and sunflowers
These are on the fence line and aren’t doing much. They were going to be for decor so I”m not super upset. I’m curious but not upset. I”ll be patient as I remember last year the pumpkins went in highs and lows as far as showing growth so we’ll just let them go and see what happens.
Carrots
They were off to a slow start and I thinned them last week so they are able to put on some more growth.
Broccoli and Cauliflower
Cauliflower is looking large and healthy but not forming any heads. I’ll research a bit on that. The broccoli row has the one out performer that ended up bolting and going to seed, the other plants aren’t doing much. I’m thinking it’s the heat so we may pull them and start some seedlings soon to go into the fall planting.
Zucchini
These four plants seem to put on grown every day! They are looking great and have some signs of fruit so hopefully we’ll enjoy them soon. I am trying to use cages on them to encourage vertical growth to avoid them touching the ground and inviting pests and disease.
Tomatoes
This is really why it’s looking like a jungle. I need to do some pruning but I’m seeing buds so and they are looking strong and healthy.
Peppers
The pepper plants are looking good but I fear I planted them too close to the Brussels sprouts.
Brussels Sprouts
Speaking of Brussels sprouts, these are doing well. I”m not seeing any sprouts actually forming but this is the first time growing them for me so it’s still a learning process. The plants are looking great and putting on a lot of growth.
Cucumbers
There are baby cukes on the vine! They are doing great and we should be making pickles soon!
Herbs
These guys are growing well! I’m working on pinching back my basil to encourage more growth. Even if I dont have a designated use for it I”m lopping it off. Lemon Balm is spreading beautifully and after 3 attempts the dill is growing!
Strawberries and Asparagus
Asparagus is sprouting and flowering nicely but the strawberries are sparse. Only two of the several bare roots I planted have come up. They look strong and are still growing but just not that many. Not sure what is up but since this is a perennial bed I”ll just keep on the lookout for runners and plant more next year if needed.
Beets
If I can keep this bed well weeded I think the beets will continue to grow well. I thinned them out as well and that’s helping too.
Onions
These rows are sure loving the rain! they are putting on lots of growth and we should see the bulbs peeking out from the soil soon.
Radishes
I cleared out the bed and replanted and as promised these grow fast and are quite satisfying to watch. They are Easter Egg variety and are so beautiful, looking forward to the second harvest.
Potatoes
Wowza, these are growing!!They are now flowering and with how low maintenance they are Mister and I are already planning on where to grow them next year so we can really put up a good amount for the year.
Beans and peas
I finally got these trellised and the peas have started to climb. They didn’t love the heat so are definitely much slower than the crop we grew last year. The beans are doing well and putting on growth.
Today the sun is shining after two days of rain and it is absolutely beautiful. I’ll do some weeding and pruning and also work a bit in some flower beds. It’s not supposed to be too hot so it’ll be wonderful to get out after the rain. I hope you had a wonderful Independence Day and time with friends and family.
