To read more about how my garden is growing this season check out my past Garden Journals from this season:
Hello and welcome back to my little corner of the internet and to my garden. We are preparing for a small heat wave here in Maine. It was 65 yesterday and today, tomorrow and Thursday will be 90 and higher. Frankly, Mainers aren’t made for that! I feel a bit overwhelmed at the thought of it but knowing that the garden enjoys it gets me through. I gave the plants a good watering last night in preparation for the heat. Lots of things happening in the garden so let’s take a walk through.
Beans
Though the chickens went after the little row of yellow beans I planted everything is coming up well. The green beans along the arches are growing nicely and will soon be grabbing the cattle panel and working their way up.
Broccoli
I have 4 small rows of broccoli and they are doing well. I started these inside this winter. Many of my seedlings seemed sort of stunted but these plants are taking off and enjoyed the cool temps we had.
Garlic
These three rows are doing great. The scapes are starting to make themselves known. I gave them some fertilizer a month or so ago and should probably do that again soon.
Tomatoes
These are the smallest seedlings Ive ever planted but they seem to be holding on. I will be working on a different trellising system this year, even if it’s just plain old tomato cages. The Florida weave method has not worked well for me. I have several volunteer tomatoes among the raised bed with cabbage. Initially I was transplanting them to the tomato area but realized I don’t need to do that. I’ll just let them go since they’ll grow higher than the cabbage.
Cucumbers
I decided not to trellis the cucumbers this year. I just filled one of the raised beds with the seedlings and we will see how it goes. A neighbor did it this way and I figured I’d try it. I lost two seedlings so I may pop a seed in the ground and see what happens. They’ll be happy with the upcoming heat!
Cabbage
I put the cabbage seedlings all in one raised bed and like I said earlier, there are volunteer tomato plants in there so we will see what happens.
Romanesco
I took a chance and started some romanesco seeds. the plants are doing very well so I hope we harvest a bit! These two plants are in the raised bed with the cabbage.
Zucchini and squash
I didnt grow a single zucchini last year and hope to change that this year. The two I have are slow but they are growing. I have several winter squash plants reaching to climb the arch.
Radish, Spinach and herbs
The radish seeds are taking off and are such a fun crop. I probably planted them too close but we will see what happens. Spinach is in the same bed and doing well. I planted dill and it’s coming up slowly but surely. I have thyme in the raised bed as well. In the cucumber bed is parsley and basil. These were two other super small seedlings from my indoor starts. Not sure what it was but some are holding on and will hopefully take off.
Raspberries
These plants are sort of ridiculous in how large and aggressive they are. We see some tiny fruit forming so that is very exciting!
Potatoes
Potatoes are such a fun crop to grow! These plants are doing very well. Some are seed potatoes and some are potatoes my Mom had that had sprouted.
Beets and Carrots
I need to thin my row of beets. Mister also planted beets and he feels superior because he didn’t over seed. We shall see who comes out on top when we harvest! Carrots are doing well, I may put in another planting where some potatoes didn’t come up.
Pumpkins
I had grand plans of growing a monster pumpkin this year and my seedlings struggled. If I grow a few to put on the steps in the fall I’ll be happy!
Strawberries
I did a lot of transplanting of runners and the bed is in a bit better shape. Still too many weeds but that’s always an issue.
Asparagus
This year brought our best asparagus harvest. We enjoyed them in lots of dishes and am still harvesting plenty!
Onions
I absolutely didn’t plan to plant this many onions but it happened. My friends and family should be prepared to have plenty of onions come fall!
Flowers
I have all of my flower beds freshly mulched so I am very happy. I also re-edged each flower bed. The grass was creeping in and needed a fresh crisp line. The poppies and peonies are putting on their show and it’s lovely. I also love the trellises Mr1 built for me for my two clematis plants.
Thanks so much for stopping in! I hope your garden is growing well and you are enjoying summer!
