Welcome back! Things are really picking up in the garden and I am trying to stay on top of it as much as possible. Come see what’s growing with me!
Zucchini
It’s coming in hot! I’ve already put about 20 cups in the freezer and they still growing like crazy. I’ve been making a lot of zucchini bread and muffins and tossing it into soup, taco meat, and anything else I can think of.
Cauliflower
I’ve picked 2 of the heads one was riced and roasted and one was blanched and frozen. These even have some purple on the underside so I”m thinking maybe its the variety I planted, I’m not quiet sure.
Herbs
I’ve picked a lot of basil so far and made one batch of pesto. I’ve also dried a bit too. So glad I practiced proper pruning and encouraged more branching because they are getting nice and full. I am researching a bit about Lemon Balm and seeing how it can be used. I picked a lot and hung it to dry, I’m thinking of using it in tea. If you have any recommendations please let me know! The dill is finally growing! I’m so excited! It took forever and a couple of plantings to finally germinate but I think I’ll be able to use a bit in pickles soon.
Lettuce/Spinach/Kale
We have enjoyed a lot of lettuce so far but I think the heat is slowing it down. I re seeded kale, spinach and lettuce and they have sprouted and are coming up nicely.
Cucumbers
We have eaten so many cukes! I’m not complaining at all because they are delicious and so easy to just grab and munch. I may do a batch of pickles soon. I did harvest my first lemon cucumber which is fun. We havent tasted it yet but will soon and report back.
Tomatoes
Oh these tomatoes, they are growing crazy and are so poorly trellised. I need to do a better method next year but for now its holding out ok. We have a lot of blooms and fruit on the vine so when they start ripening we’ll be harvesting.
Brussels Sprouts
I lopped off the top of these and hopefully will see tighter heads of sprouts in the future. They are as tall as they are going to get right now so their energy is going into the heads.
Peppers
There is quite bit of fruit on the vine, we’ll give them a bit more time to hopefully get red, yellow or orange. I’m trying to keep their neighboring Brussels sprouts from totally shading them.
Beans
Flambo beans are growing nicely and are so pretty! They’ll stay on the vine for a while so we can use them as dried beans. Yellow wax beans are really coming in. I blanched and froze on batch and there are a lot more on the vine to harvest soon. Green beans are vining like crazy and have lots of blossoms so we’ll see fruit very soon.
Broccoli
We have harvested a bit and are waiting for the smaller off shoots to come in. So glad I waited and didn’t pull these plants thinking they were a lost cause.
Cabbage
We are getting great cabbage, I’m aiming to make some sauerkraut this week.
Beets
We have been harvesting some beautiful beets and I noticed that what was left was super tiny or nothing but greens so we pulled everything out, gave the greens to the pigs (we arent fans of beet greens) and re seeded the bed for a fall crop. Do you see how one of these is a decent size and the one that was right next to it is super tiny? They should have been thinned better. This seeding we watched spacing and will thin more diligently if need be.
Onions
These beds are looking good and I think they’ll be ready to harvest soon.
Potatoes
I think we have blight so I”m debating on pulling some and seeing if they are ok. I should have spraying and am not quite sure why I didnt.
Carrots
The boys helped me start to pull the carrots and we have some beautiful ones. We’ll pull these and reseed for a fall crop. We harvested about 4 pounds and they were sliced, blanched and frozen.
Squash
Spaghetti squash is putting a lot on the vine, butternut squash is looking healthy but not any on the vine yet. Will keep a close eye as they may just be a bit slower to start.
Strawberries
Even though several of my strawberry plants didnt come up this week I saw some runners!
Flowers
Some of my flowers are really showing off and I am so enjoying them! Celosia, Dahlias, Salvia,Sweet Peas and Zinnia are some of the ones I planted from seed so it’s really exciting to enjoy them now. This dart just wont germinate for some reason. I tell the boys all the time to not try and plant them in the garden, hehehe.
