I’m always on the look out for inexpensive (or free) field trips. When the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath announced that they are offering free admission for the entire month of January 2020, I jumped at the chance for a spot I have been wanting to visit for a while.
The boys and I met some friends this past week. Because it is January the outdoor features were closed but we will definitely be back to visit those in the warmer months. Set right on the shore of the Kennebec River the museum has been a in its current location since 1989 but has been a collection of information and celebration of Maine Marine History since 1962. The museum has evolved over the years and its current location is a beautiful 3 story building full of wonderful exhibits, information and hands on opportunities.
Walking in the entry of the building the first thing you see are the high ceilings, flags and a hands on exhibit displaying the pistons and workings of a motor. The boys loved it, and it wasn’t just the button to push.
The next spot that took them was the Tugboat Pilot House where they could see a map, turn the wheel and make several noises.
Other exhibits include the Lighthouse experience, Maritime History of Maine, and the Wyoming Gallery. The theater showed a documentary of lighthouse keepers and their past in Maine.
The boys had a wonderful time and hope to go back again soon to bring Daddy with us. I was running around after Mr4 so I didn’t get to truly read and take in the exhibits but I would love to go back again and try to read a bit more. It was a wonderful spot to take in some Maine history and enjoy the afternoon with friends. A generous grant allowed the museum to offer free admission for January 2020, if you don’t make it at that time or if you want to go in the warmer months and enjoy the outside opportunities, check your local library, they often offer passes to area attractions.

I live in Maine as well. I didn’t know that they were offering free admission for the month of January. I haven’t been to this museum since I was a kid. I don’t come across other bloggers from Maine very often. It’s nice to see someone local. Thanks for sharing.
After I posted this I found out that they extended the free admission through February! Glad to find you online, fellow Mainer!
Nice idea for a day outing
Maine is on my bucket list! I heard it’s beautiful. Plus, I’m a huge seafood lover, and I’ve heard good things lol.
We surely have the seafood, plus beautiful scenery and lots more to explore!
I love this. I spent my honeymoon in Bar Harbor, Maine and I fell in love with the state. I can’t to get back to Maine and check out the Maritime Museum.
