Ways To Get Ready For Spring When it Isn’t Quite Spring Yet

It’s March! Does the calendar flipping from February to March often make you start hunting for spring? I love winter but at this point in the year I’m ready for the change of seasons. In Maine we often have to look a little longer. We could have more legitimate snow storms well before we have green grass.  As this is being posted we have a bit of snow left and I know many parts of Maine have most of their yard still covered and this has been a fairly mild winter for Mainers. Does this leave you feeling unsettled?  Weary with anticipation?  Here are some ways to make good use of this time of year when you are so ready for spring but it just isn’t  quite spring yet.

Organize/De clutter/Clean Something

Find a couple of spots that need some organization or to be simplified. Fill some bags for donation.  Start your spring cleaning. One of my favorite places that is fast to clean is the refrigerator. Just before you go grocery shopping clear out old leftover containers and anything expired. If you have bottles of things you started but don’t care for get those out of there too. Wipe down all the shelves, wash out the bins on the doors and it’ll be a great refresh. Another spot to clear are clothes. If you haven’t worn that sweater yet this season you probably wont again so fill a bag to make some space for spring clothes when it’s time to switch over seasonal clothes. Plan your Garden

Get some books from the library to research what you want to grow. Start some seeds. I am very excited for some raised beds at our new house.  I’m planning on some veggies and herbs and also a section for cut flowers so I can enjoy fresh flowers in the house through the season.

Freezer Meals

Double batch some meals in the next couple of weeks so when you and the kids are outside playing you don’t have to cut your time short to go make dinner. Spring sports are another great reason to have some freezer meals stashed away.

Plan Field Trips

Find a couple of local spots to visit or connect with your local home school group and join a field trip. Put something together for your group of friends so you can all take advantage of the group discount. If you are in Maine, or would like to plan a visit, go check out my Adventures menu for some of our field trips.

House Plants

Oh plants, I love them so much! Ask a friend if they have any clippings they’d like to share, check Facebook marketplace to get some established plants for a good price or just grab something at the grocery store. My favorite low maintenance easy to grow plants are Swedish ivy and dumb cane.

Go Visit Someone

If you are feeling cabin fever chances are a neighbor, friend or someone at church is feeling that way too.  Planning a visit, just for a cup of coffee and a chat can bring cheer to all who take part. If you cant go visit, send something in the mail. This is a great way to practice handwriting during school time!

Go Outside Anyway

Yes, it’s cold but even a short bit of time outside brings appreciation to nature and movement regardless of your being ready for that nature to look different. It’s good for our kids to see that we need fresh air even when conditions are 60 and sunny.

If you are in the Northern US and anxiously awaiting warmer temps and green grass, I’m right there with you!

  1. I was in get ready for spring mode until seeing the forecast for a snowfall warning this weekend. Yikes! I do love your tip to go outside anyways. I always feel better when I’ve been outside, no matter what the weather is. It’s amazing how much better my kids get along with each other following some outside time as well!
