This post is going up not long after my last entry in the garden journal. Things are moving and changing so fast in the garden going faster than my blogging schedule!
I received a drip system for Mother’s Day and my sweet hubby started the process. He and the big boys dug a trench, no easy task, and ran the a water spigot in the garden area.
The golden rule in Maine is to not plant warm weather crops until Memorial Day. I checked the forecast and it’s not supposed to be below 50 at night so I went ahead and put some more things in.
I started with my straw bales. I used my garden trowel and loosened up the spots in the bale and tossed in a bit of my topsoil/compost blend. Then tossed in the seeds , I put in zinnias, delphinium, and sunflowers in one bale. The other bales I put in zucchini and squash and my pumpkin seedlings.
I planted my two tomato seedlings in the raised bed. They were getting a little too big for the milk jug they were in and I’m really hoping the transplanted ok and I didnt damage one of the roots. We’ll pray on that one. For a bit of added protection for their first night in the dirt I topped them with the clear plastic tote I’ have been using. I bought 4 more seedlings from a nearby farm and put them in as well. They seem to have transplanted well .
Cucumbers were next so I plopped those in the raised bed and also topped them with a bit of protection with the top of the milk jugs.
Mister helped me cut stakes and attached them to the sides of the bed. I am trying out a weaving method to trellis to support the tomatoes, sugar snap peas and cukes.
Zucchini has started to sprout in the straw bales as well as a couple of the of the flowers and a butternut squash.
We left for one night and out potatoes really did some growing. We had a blast of some warm temps and lots of sun right at Memorial Day weekend. The potatoes from the grocery store are thriving and the seed potatoes are following close behind.
I have read that new gardeners often over water their plants so I am trying to make sure I don’t do that. I’m watching the weather, we really could use some rain, and trying to water a bit in the morning and if it there is a lot of sun and a breeze I’ll give them a little drink in the evening as well.
I put in my basil and parsley transplants and have a few more basil plants to put in when they are bigger. I cant wait to make pesto!
Our temperatures have taken a bit of a drop after a couple of days of heat. The breeze is so welcome to keep the bugs away! How is your garden doing? What are you learning? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
