Hello and welcome! Here we are in mid June and things are gearing up in the garden. We added three 4 x 10 and one smaller raised bed this year. May was a very busy month as far as building the beds, prepping beds and walk ways and mulching. My back is glad to have a break and just watch things grow!
Zucchini, pumpkins and squash
My first planting of zucchini did not germinate so I plopped some more in and am hoping they take. I think the seeds are old. Pumpkins are growing nicely. I love my hog panel arches and hope the spaghetti squash will make a fun archway. In the space we had pigs last year we have found 23 volunteer squash plants. we’ll see what kind they are soon!
Tomatoes
I lopped off two plants with the hose so took them in the house and watched them put on some roots. I put both back in the ground so they are a bit behind the others but still growing well. I have half of the tomatoes supported with regular tomato cages and the other half I am using the Florida Weave method of trellising. In an effort to not go out and buy more cages I figured we’d try a side by side experiment of the two methods of support.
Lettuce, spinach and kale
Lettuce is growing well! I need to make sure to inspect leaves more carefully as I served a family member a salad and a cute little snail came up to say hello before they took their first bite. Spinach is sparse but coming up well.
Beans
I have pole beans on the arch way and a row of yellow beans. The yellow beans came up well but something has been feasting on the about half of the plants leaves. It doesn’t look like enough to have totally killed it but just in case I tossed some more seeds in and will keep a close eye for slugs or other bugs. I also planted a small bed of flambo beans. They are so pretty and I’d love to put up some dried beans.
Peppers
I bought just 3 pepper seedlings at the local greenhouse. They transplanted nicely and I am excited to see their growth. Last year I had them too crowded and hopefully this years spacing will suit them better.
Broccoli
The broccoli is growing great! I had a small issue a couple of weeks ago with some yellow spots but I think it was in need of water. It seems to have resolved now.
Cucumbers
Cukes are holding steady, hoping with some warmer temps they take off. I started everything from seed in March and popped one seed of a Suyo Long variety in the ground a couple of weeks ago. They ended up being a favorite last year and Mr3 pleaded with me to grow it again.
Beets and Carrots
I filled one of the raised beds with beets and carrots and they are coming up well. Half of another bed has been succession planted with carrots and beets. Really looking for good long term storage from these 2 crops. I plan to freeze some but would love to keep some in cool storage.
Onions and leeks
I purchased seedlings from the greenhouse and for the price I paid will definitely grow them from seed next year. They are growing well!
Strawberries and asparagus
We have ripe berries! Runners are also out so as soon as they put on roots we’ll help them get to the dirt and get settled for next year. Asparagus came up well and is very tall and flopping over so I helped them out a bit with some string.
Raspberries and rhubarb
I made a quick bed and transplanted rhubarb and raspberry plants. They look a little sad but just need a few days to get settled and enjoy the rain that is expected.
