We finally enjoyed some rain! Lately, I just go out to check on the garden and dont need to water or tend too much. I’m looking out for new growth, adjusting supports, picking tiny weeds, checking if any bug damage has happened,etc.
Potatoes-
Potatoes are going strong! I added more compost and hilled them up more to protect the roots. The first batch I planted is probably at their peak height and the second batch is quickly following.
Lettuce-
The bibb lettuce, red lettuce and lettuce blend I first planted did not do so well. We picked what we could and called them “micro greens” I tilled the rest in and replanted. I think I may have planted the first batch too deep in the soil and my bibb seeds could be old so those two things could be my issue.
Tomatoes and snap peas are doing well and climbing up the trellis beautifully. I will most likely be making the trellis for the snap peas higher soon. We see some tiny tomatoes forming and more buds to follow.In the same bed we had some extra room so I planted three plants of two types of bush beans. I went with Blue Lake Bush Bean and the Provider Bean. We all really love green beans so the boys are excited. I opted for the bush variety so I didn’t have to trellis them.
Red bell pepper-
I added a red bell pepper plant to this bed. I’m not sure if we’ll have warm enough temps for long enough for a pepper but we’ll see how it goes.
Broccoli-
I planted broccoli seeds and one of the four have come up. I didn’t have proper labels so I just tucked a stick next to where I planted each. I am finding I cant tell what tiny seedling is a veggie and what is a weed so hopefully this will help me. I also planted 4 kale seeds and two have come up well.
Pumpkins and zucchini-
The pumpkins and zucchini in the straw bales are growing nicely. We have several tiny pumpkins and blossoms. The zucchini has really enjoyed the rain and seems to be considerably larger every time I pop out which is sometimes a couple times a day.
Butternut Squash-
My butternut squash are growing but slowly, hoping they just need some warmer temps for a few days in a row. It looks like an animal is enjoying a snack of it’s leaves too. We are supposed to have a nice week of weather coming up so hopefully the weather and if I try some deterrent strategies we’ll have a good week of growth.
