We moved into our new house last week! We are very excited, tired, but excited. There is still plenty of work on the actual house as well as unpacking to do but we are getting there and it is so nice to be back with Mister full time now.
Kitchen- I’ve been unpacking the kitchen for a while now. It’s a bit of a slow process simply because I am not set in the flow of the kitchen yet. As long as I remember that nothing has to be permanent and that we will, in the future, have more storage in the panty/laundry room I’m doing fine. I’m trying to use some KonMari methods as far as where things are being stored. When planning our kitchen, we aimed to have more drawers than cabinets and I’m loving how things are going.
Food- I am so glad I purchased some pantry staples over the last couple of months. When I would buy something, we needed at my parents, I’d buy and additional to have ready for the house. Things like tea, condiments, molasses, spices, laundry detergent, dish detergent, and soap are things that add up super-fast when you move in. I went grocery shopping two days in a row last week due to lack of planning and taking advantage of a good sale. I also had a chance to go to Trader Joes this weekend so I did some spending and we should be good for at least week. There are still more pantry items to get but with meal planning I’ll be able to get those gradually so it doesn’t hit the wallet as hard as buying them all at once.

School storage- We hope to finish the basement in the future and make it into our school room. That won’t be happening for a while so for now we will have school at the kitchen table. With more cabinet space then I have ever had before I’m utilizing one of the far cabinets as our school items. Each of the big boys have a crate with their school books and papers. I will have another shelf for coloring books and dry erase books for the little boys. When it is school time, we’ll just take out each crate and when we are done tuck the whole thing away. While at my parents we had downsized a lot of our school stuff to just a couple of shelves so this set up isn’t a huge change for how we have been set up for school for the last year.
Bedrooms- We have had a hard time finding the hardware for the bunk beds and our contractor is coming to work and we don’t have closet organizers in yet so bedrooms aren’t set up a whole lot. I got clothes put into dressers and that’s helping us get some boxes and totes out of rooms. The boys are sleeping on their mattresses on the floor and they have been sleeping fairly well.
Living room- we aren’t able to do a lot in the living room until our contractor has a couple of more days and with CC and some other things going on, we won’t be unpacking or anything. For now, things are pushed to the side of the room. Once he’s done with the trim, we’ll be able to put book shelves into place and fill them up. I had no idea how many children’s books we have!! We’ll get books on shelves and toys into bins on shelves and that will take care of several boxes and totes.
I have already brought two bags full of things to the donation drop off at the transfer station and have a large box of both clothes and toys to consign. I cleared out a lot of clothes when we moved. I’m using the reminder of if clothes don’t fit in the space I have then things have to go. My Mother In Law said she’d take some toys at her house so she can rotate some things out so we have a box filling up with toys to bring to her. We are downsizing our play space considerably so our toys will downsize as well.
Overall things are going very well. It’s fun to see rooms continue to take shape. I need to get a rug for the living room and drawer pulls and knobs for the kitchen. We’d like to get some blinds as well but will probably wait for a good sale or a coupon. I have curtains that I think will work so we will just have to get the curtain rods.
I look forward to sharing with you the changes and what works and doesn’t work in our new home. Thanks for stopping by!
