You don’t have to be in or from Maine to love reading stories of black bears, lazy days on the beach of an chilly shoreline, or bundling up to spend the day romping in the snow. Until 2015 our family lived away from my beloved home state of Maine. Right up until we knew Mister had a job up here we only longed to move back to be closer to our families. Having both grown up here we always wanted to be back in Maine amidst that trees, beautiful summers, and unique characteristics that make Maine a very special place to live.  Until we moved we wanted our boys to know of our state through as many visits North that we could manage and through beautiful children’s books. These are books I have grown up with as well as many that are new. I love how these, and many not listed here,  authors capture Maine so that even if you cannot come to visit or live in person, readers can enjoy the simple beauty that Maine offers. Our family highly recommends adding these to your personal collection or checking them out of your library the next time you visit.

Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey- Little Sal and her Mom, and Little Bear and his mom go out to pick blueberries. Readers will love how both families meld among the blueberry barrens.

One Morning in Maine By Robery McCloskey- Sal grows up a bit with her Dad while he’s digging for clams and then goes on a local adventure.

Counting our Way to Maine By Maggie Smith- Light and cheerful illustrations take you through one family’s escape from the city and  vacation Maine.

The Wicked Big Toddlah By Kevin Hawkes- Get a little taste of Maine dialect in this witty story of a large little boy and his family. Each time you read it you will see a new portion of the illustrations and chuckle.

Good Night Maine By Adam Gamble- We own the board book and it’s our little guy’s favorite way to travel all through the state from ocean to mountain and say good night.

A Train to Maine By Jamie Spencer- A family daydreams of their adventures as they travel Down East with Maine on their minds.

Moose of Course by Lynn Plourde-A lovely rhyming and counting story about a moose and other animals.

Moose on the Loose By John and Ann Hassett-Max the moose gets tired of life at the pond and goes for a walk only to find himself in the middle of Bangor makine quite a spectacle of himself.

The Circus Ship By Chris Van Dusen- A ship full of circus animals crashes and the animals find themselves among a quiet ocean side town in Maine.

I Met a Moose in Maine One Day By Ed Shankman- A boy was starting his day when all of a sudden a moose appears and the two travel all over the state.

Lost on a Mountain In Maine By Don Fendler -A book for a bit older readers or for a read aloud.  Don gets lost from his group and endures a scary and miraculous 9 days in the harsh, bug filled wilderness of Northern  Maine.

  1. Nice! I didn’t realize Blueberries for Sal was a ME book…been a while since I’ve looked at that one. I’ll have to check these others out :).

  2. I’m also from Maine and want to get some of these books for my daughter. It’s nice to see another mom blogger from Maine. Thanks for the suggestions.

  3. Although I’m not from Maine I want to get some of these books to read to my grandchild. Thank you for the information, great post!

  4. Such a great list. When I moved to Maine to years ago someone gave us many of these as a going away present and I just loved them. And these books have been read over and over in our new home.
