Renys- Maine Spotlight

First opened in 1949 in Damariscotta, Maine RH Reny started selling merchandise in the store and door to door out of his vehicle. Renys now has 17 stores and employs more than 500 people. When we lived in Virginia and visited Maine a must go to spot was Renys. I didn’t have to go in with a specific purchase in mind but it is a store that brings me back to childhood and I’ve never found a store like it anywhere else.

Renys offers a huge selection and wide variety of items. You can go in and get a birthday gift, snack food, fishing pole, shoes, home décor and anything in between.  This specific day I was going in to buy crocs for one of my boys. I do like shopping online but when it comes to footwear, I prefer to have a brick and mortar store to go exchange it to.

Baking Staples

One of my favorite things to get is any of the Bobs Red Mill products. I often buy flax meal, turbinado sugar, wheat germ, and chia seeds at Renys. I saw Bobs Red Mill Protein Powder for the first time on this trip. I figured I’d give it a try!

Toys and Games

Coloring books, to Legos, to kites and outdoor games.  I often give a gift certificate to friends when we celebrate birthdays with them. Renys offers a great selection of card and board games.

Snacks

Snacks are a great thing to buy at Renys. Nuts are a very good price as well as maple syrup. If I cant get to the farm I know I can get syrup from New England at a good price.

Clothes

Another item I can often get here. Typically the brand names are crossed out of the clothes but you can tell what the brand is, it’s a great way to get brand name pieces for great prices. I often get jeans and layering tanks here.  Kids clothes are a great bet at Renys too. My boys love the many options of camo items.  Now that I think of it, I bought my favorite bathing suit at Renys a few years ago too.

Maine Made products

I love how many different Maine made products Renys offers. Everything from mustard and hot sauce to snow shovels.  I love buying gifts from Maine as it feels like a two for one deal, supporting two local businesses with one purchase.

Household items

Kitchen tools, cute dish towels, and kitchen organization are always a reason to swing by Renys. If you are looking for something you cant find other places it’s always good to try here. My (in use) dish drainer and paper towel holder are from Renys when we moved to our first house in Maine a few years ago.

Maine Swag

Don’t forget to get Maine souvenirs if you are visiting or if you want to send a little Maine swag or postcard to a friend.

If you are a Mainer do you shop a Renys? What do you find there? Have you visited Maine and gone to Renys?  I hope you’ll stop by again on your next visit! Lots of locations all over Maine make it easy to stop in for fun or for specific items.
