Hello and welcome back to our garden! Things are really kicking into gear, it’s so exciting!
Cucumbers-
They just keep getting taller! We have harvested, pickled and enjoyed several of the picklers. The new seedlings from my neighbor are slowly but steadily growing.
Tomatoes-
We have enjoyed several sun gold tomatoes and have harvested 3-4 of the Rubelski and Margold. The two Amish Paste plants that I started from seed were struggling but when I went out to water today they have lots of new growth and even have some blossoms!
Zucchini-
They survived the transplant! We even have a couple of beauties to harvest soon.
Pumpkins and squash-
These plants totally faked me out. They were drying and withering one day and then I noticed a bit of new grown and now they are producing beautiful pumpkins and butternut squash!We did have a snake guest who found it funny to go inside the straw bale to get away from my boys who were trying to save their petrified mom. Next year I will totally be working on ways to deter snakes from our garden spaces.
Potatoes-
OH my poor potatoes. They were super tall and flopped over. Never mind the black spot or blight they suffered at the start of July. Mister and I thought we’d dig up one plant to see how they were doing and they were affected by the black spot or blight. We kept digging and kept finding the affected potatoes. We ended up being able to keep 1/3 of all of the first planting of seed potatoes we put in. A bit of a bummer but I know that next year I will give them much more space between each plant and each row to allow more air flow and hopefully prevent those diseases.
Beans
They are starting to climb and the boys and I keep talking about Jack and his beanstalk when we go see them. They are doing well in the raised bed and in the straw bale. I think the slug prevention I used is working as I haven’t seen them as much. We are hoping to be harvesting and making dilly beans soon. Mister helped me make a trellis out of some acquired cattle fencing. I also cut down some sticks in the woods and stuck them next to the seedlings to climb up.
Carrots-
I tried a test pull and it brought up a carrot! My little boys happened to be with me when I was checking them out and were just tickled and giggling when they pulled up their own carrot. There are still some fairly small tops so we’ll let them stay for a little longer.
Fall crops-
After clearing the potatoes out we also dug up another bed. I planted broccoli along with more carrots and more beets. This will be another good comparison of the raised beds and the ground bed. Broccoli is up and doing well. I’ll need to thin some of them soon. There are a few beet and carrot seedlings up so far.
