Rain, where are you? We haven’t had more than a few drops since my last update. I said a while back I am being aware of not making a typical rookie mistake and over watering. It’s hard when we are in a drought! It depends on how hot it has been but I have been watering thoroughly about every 2 and a half days. The more I read the more I learn that by not watering too often it helps the plants develop stronger root systems. Hopefully it’s working and benefiting in my garden!
Potatoes are doing great. We even have blossoms! I am on the daily lookout for potato beetles. A friend warned me and said they literally show up overnight so I am watching like a hawk. I have seen a few lady bugs so I know the good bugs are doing good things! I added more soil and mounding up the roots a bit more.
Tomatoes are going strong. There are several large tomatoes on the vine and a couple of clusters of the Sun Gold variety. The plants I started from seed myself are smaller than the seedlings I bought but they are a different variety and if I remember correctly they are determinate so they will be producing all their fruit at once.
Cucumbers are doing well in their new cages. I am training them away from the snap peas and they are getting quite big.
Sugar snap peas have become the boys favorite snack! We have only had enough for each of them to have 2 or 3 but they proudly tell friends about their home grown snack
Zucchini are reaching high and tall in the straw bales. There are several small blossoms. I cannot wait to be harvesting some zucchini to make muffins, bread and stashing it in the freezer for a great way to add veggies into things.
Pumpkins were off to a strong start but seem to have fizzled a bit. The plants look great but the tiny pumpkin I shared a while ago fell off the vine. Mr4 and I were so sad! Several of the blossoms just fell off. The vines are about to reach the ground and there are many more blossoms forming so I’m hoping it’ll still produce for us.
My second raised bed is struggling. The second planting of lettuce sprouted but have stalled for all but 2 or 3 plants. The kale is growing but very slowly. I ended up popping in a couple of rattlesnake pole beans from a neighbor. The boys and I put two in the raised bed and two in my empty straw bale and will tend to it as an experiment to compare the two growing scenarios. Beets and Carrots are there but don’t seem to be getting any bigger. I may try another planting of each in one of the corners of this bed or wait till mid July and try for a fall crop of broccoli. It seems odd to have such empty space but we’ll see what happens.
