To read more about how my garden is growing this season check out my past Garden Journals from this season:
It’s mid November, and I cant believe I still have crops in the garden. We are having a very unseasonably warm November. It wouldn’t be crazy for us to have snow right now! I’ve been working little by little to get it all buttoned up for winter.
Carrots, beets, and chard. I am using low poly covers (purchased from Gardener’s Supply) on the rows of carrots, beets and broccoli. These covers are really great. They are affordable, fold up accordion style for easy storage and were very easy to install.
Kale is still coming up and going strong!
Cabbage is looking OK, Not sure we’ll actually harvest any of them before it gets too cold but I was given the seedlings so I put them in the soil and figured I’d try.
Herbs in the ground are dill, parsley and rosemary. I need to pull the lemon balm. Though it is pretty and smells amazing I don’t need to grow as much as it grows in our season. The sprawl is not ideal for the spot I grew it.
Garlic went in a couple of weeks ago. I took up the black plastic that is in the far back row of our garden space. Mister brought over compost and I raked it out and planted straight into it. I still need to cover it with leaf mulch.
I dug up the dahlia tubers. This is the first time I have grown dahlias and I grew them from seed. I cannot get over the size of these tubers! I will store them in a box with wood shavings and make sure to check on them each month. I am a little concerned about the humidity in the coldest space in our basement. Checking them will hopefully ensure I save them for next year. The shoe box I happened to have had the silica packets in it so maybe that’ll help with the fear of rotting tubers I have.
I have removed almost all of the annual flowers including the sunflowers. The little boys had a blast removing the seeds with different tools. We saved some seeds for next year and the rest they laid out for the birds and squirrels to enjoy.
I planted flower bulbs this past weekend. I planted hyacinth, crocus, and tulips.
My To Do List:
-Finish planting flower bulbs.
-Remove weeds in paths of garden bed and cover with wood chips if I can find some.
-Cover garden beds with leaf mulch.
-Remove debris and dead flower matter in flower beds.
-Set reminders on my phone to check on the dahlia tubers.
It is a little sad to go out to the garden space and see how barren it is. I try to remind myself that it’s just sleeping until spring, resting and energizing to produce food and flowers for our family. My goal is to not have soil exposed all winter in an effort to retain moisture and soil nutrition. We will expand our garden in the spring and rotate crops. I am looking forward to learning even more and trying new crops in the spring! Thank you so much for following along with me through this growing season!
