To read more about how my garden is growing this, check out my past Garden Journals from this season:

Hello and welcome back to the garden! Things are getting crazy and jungle-ish down in my garden but that’s what it is in August right? We had a spell of a week or two of pretty hot and humid (and miserable) weather. We are finally not in that same spell right now. It’s hoodie in the morning weather and that’s my favorite! Here is what is growing in my garden.
Fall planting of cabbage, broccoli, spinach and cauliflower
I started these babies in July and they are doing well. I put them in about a week ago and they are taking off! This is the first row I was able to top dress with our own compost so I was excited.

Zucchini and Squash
Growing well but not overwhelming which is nice.

Kale
Kale is growing great! I’ve never had this many plants (5) grow this nicely for this long. I’m hoping to keep it up until the cold weather comes. Such a treat to have fresh stuff even when it’s cold.
Tomatoes
They are beginning to ripen and take residence on my kitchen island. I just purchased an attachment to my mixer to process the tomatoes straight into jars and then process them. Very excited to see if my plan to grow only paste tomatoes is going to pay off and make processing less time intensive.

Beans
Both yellow and green beans are growing well. I don’t think I’ll have enough to can or freeze much. Making note to plant more beans! The green beans are finally starting to grow up the arch which is exciting from a visual aspect of the garden. Flambo beans are starting to dry out and the pods are so pretty with their purple speckles.

Pumpkins
I am fighting the squash bugs hard and I hope I’m winning! We have some nice sized pumpkins both in the main garden and in the area where the volunteer pumpkins are growing. My goal with pumpkins was to grow enough to decorate with and I should be good to go. I wont plant pumpkins in the main garden next year. They take up so much room I don’t want to give up that real estate next year. I”ll also work on weed control wherever I end up planting them.

Spaghetti Squash
These beauties are growing up the arch and they are gorgeous! This plant is taking off the last couple of weeks and it is so much fun to watch grow.

Carrots
The first planting is growing well. I definitely need to thin them better next year. I have a second planting that is just coming up and I’ll be diligent about thinning them.

Beets
Golden and classic red and these are coming up strong and harvesting well. I’d like to utilize the greens and maybe puree and freeze them for smoothies.
Cut flower bed
The sunflowers should be ready to cut very soon! Zinnias are also starting to bloom. Very exciting!

Thanks for stopping by the garden! As always I am learning and enjoying the process. The garden teaches patience, planning and gratitude. I hope you are growing something that can bring you joy and nourish your body!
