I used to have a very large collection of cookbooks. I’d pick them up at thrift stores or yard sales. I received many of them as gifts specifically for our wedding. Each move we have made I have pared down my collection. Mister used to make fun of me for reading cookbooks like a novel. Just about every week I borrow a cookbook from the library just to peruse and gain some culinary inspiration.   It’s great to go to Pinterest for recipes but I still enjoy having an actual book to reference.  I only buy a cookbook if it has several recipes I will make.  This keeps me from having too many and value the ones I do have. Here are my favorites and ones I use regularly.

Betty Crocker Cookbook – I received this one at my bridal shower 14 years ago. I use the pancake and waffle recipe as well as the chocolate lava cake and coleslaw recipe regularly.   This one is a fantastic resource for basic, reliable methods and skills.

Cooking Downeast- This has been one I’ve also had since my bridal shower. I love that these are classic Maine recipes.  This is my go to banana bread recipe as well as biscuits.  I’m waiting for the occasion to make Indian Pudding, an old school Maine recipe.

Green Plate Special- I was delighted to meet this Maine author last summer.  Her whole concept of sustainable budget friendly meals is how I aim to cook.  I enjoy her recipe for crackers and how many of her recipes use all ingredients to their fullest so there is no waste. My favorite recipe is on page 17, Bacon, greens, and egg in the hole breakfast pizzas.

Mad Hungry- I started following Lucinda Scala Quinn back when I had two boys because she is a fellow boymom and loved to cook home cooked food for them. I love her Hash Brown Egg Topper recipe and recipe for Lemon Icey.

Not your Mamas Make Ahead and Freeze cookbook- Author Jessica Fishers Basic Pizza Dough recipe is my go to and has been for years. I also love all of her variations of muffins.

Instant Pot Meals made from scratch- One of my newest books and I’ve already made so many meals we love! Mac and cheese, cheeseburger all the way pasta, and Change Your Life Spaghetti and Meatballs are fast favorites. I am waiting for the perfect occasion to try her Late- Night Fudgy Brownies.

Do you have a lot of cookbooks? What are you returning stars? Happy fooding!

  1. Better Homes and Gardens Complete Step by Step Cook Book. It’s not even in print anymore. Basically taught myself to cook with it.
