What I Buy at Walmart

I grocery shop at 3 main stores, Walmart, Shaws and Sams Club. There are a couple of items like flour and oats that I get at Uncle Deans Natural Market and when I am near one I stock up on bread and other baked goods at the Bakery Outlet. I shop at one of these per week and stock up on the items that have the best price.

WalMart has long been the lowest price point for most of my pantry staples. I also get most of our hygiene and paper products there. I have two ‘ Wally Worlds’ that I often shop at and usually use grocery pick up. Do you use grocery pick up? OH my goodness, it is life changing!! By ordering from my phone or computer at home I am able to spend less on impulse purchases and see a running total of my cart so I can keep it in my budget even more. I also dont have to chase my boys through the store!

Here are some of my top favorite items to buy at Wal-Mart:

Unsweetened Applesauce-

This is my go to when I dont have a fresh fruit or I have boys who dont want to eat the fresh fruit I have. I always have several of these in my pantry as it round out toast and eggs for breakfast, or pairs with a peanut butter and jelly. I fill refillable pouches with applesauce for snacks and lunches at CC or the playground. This makes an affordable snack that is easy to eat on the run.

Canned Fruit in 100% fruit juice-

My boys favorite is the canned pears. These are enjoyed along the same lines as applesauce. I always drain the juice into a glass jar and save it for smoothies.

Peanuts-

We’ll toss these with raisins and even chocolate chips for a treat.

Beans-

Beans are such a budget friendly staple. I don’t strictly shop organic but the garbanzo beans at Walmart are only a little bit higher than their conventional twin so I go for the organic. I use the garbanzos to make my Quick and Easy Hummus. Dried beans go right in my instant pot. I’ll cook up the entire bag, covered in water at 22 minutes at high pressure, strain them and spread on a cookie sheet to cool and then put in the freezer. Once frozen, I put them in a zip top bag to use in soups, on taco Tuesday, chili, and any other application.

String Cheese-

Quick, budget friendly protein. I often have to cut Mr4 off at 3 a day, he loves string cheese! I pack these up with applesauce pouches, sliced apples, pears or grapes.

Tortilla Chips-

We always have these on hand and this brand is our favorite for taste and for price. Nachos, taco salad, beans and rice, or mexican casseroles, they are delicious.

Chocolate Chips-

If I need a bit of chocolate I often reach for chocolate chips. We use them for baking and snacking. Walmart’s Great Value brand is a good combo of price and flavor.

Peanut Butter-

Years ago it took my family a while to shift to a lower sugar peanut butter. I get this brand at Walmart or the same generic version at Sam’s Club.

Frozen Veggies-

Frozen vegetables get a bad wrap but they are a staple of my kitchen. A whole food that is on hand whenever you need it? Yes please! We’ll have steamed broccoli with a grilled protein or in Snacky Mac. Mr3 is semi picky about fruits and veggies but he will almost always eat broccoli. I usually a have broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and corn on hand.

Cereal-

Cereal isnt my favorite breakfast. It’s not actually that cheap per serving and my children are hungry 10.4 seconds after eating it. We reserve cereal for weekend breakfasts only and these are the two I usually have on hand. It’s not the cardboard variety but it’s not sugar laden either. I love that this brand has the resealable bags as well.

Do you shop at Walmart for groceries? I feel old when I can say I remember when Walmart didn’t have groceries. What do you buy most often? I’d love to hear in the comments!
