Here we are at the end of October. We have had an absolutely beautiful fall. Lots of time outside and the slow down of the garden was welcomed. Initially I felt bad about feeling tired of garden work but I quickly learned that most gardeners feel this way. It’s a season and that’s a good thing!

Here are some the major things I learned this growing season:

Plants can move locations, nothing in the garden has to be permanent.

It’s better to water deeply and less often than more often and less water.

Write down what and where you grow it. You wont remember everything.

From the start of the season, be consistent with deer repellent measures. Just because they don’t enjoy your plants in the summer doesn’t mean they wont as they head towards fall.

Be patient with your plants, they will likely surprise you.

I will not be using straw bales again. They seemed to encourage slugs and snakes and didn’t stay upright and forced me to transplant things.

We pulled the last zucchini and pumpkin off our plants this afternoon. Between my garden and my neighbors I have made probably 10-12 quarts of tomato sauce. I made pickles and pickled veggies. My salsa didn’t come out great but will be fine to use in recipes.

I learned a ton about flowers and landscaping. My biggest joy was probably my Strawberry Vanilla hydrangea that I planted right next to our front steps. I enjoyed being greeted by this beauty when we arrived at home. As I type this it still has a new bloom on it! I believe we have a frost tonight so it’ll be going bye bye soon. I dried several blooms and really love enjoying them in the house. We saved several seeds so I’m hoping to be able to save those funds in the spring. Sunflowers are also something I’ll be planting lots of next year.

I have garlic bulbs ready to go in the soil as well as tulips. I am very excited to try to grow those bulbs as well as dahlias and zinnias. I have so enjoyed logging my garden adventure with you this season. Thank you for reading and I cant wait to design and grow a new space next year!
