Here we are at the end of August. The garden is doing well and we have learned so much and are already looking to next growing season!

Tomatoes-

We have had a lot of splitting on the Sun Golds so I have started to harvest them sooner. The other larger varieties seem to be growing several inches a day and I have to re support them as they are getting way bigger than my space. We have a lot of fruit on the vines so I’m hoping we can see some start ripening sooner than later.

Beans-

We have been snacking on a lot and we now have several flowers on the latest planting. I’m thinking we will have a mass hit of green beans all at once. We even have one that volunteered just outside of the garden area on the wood chips so we staked it and have been enjoying it’s beans!

Bell Pepper-

We have had one pepper off of this plant so far. It didn’t get a chance to turn red before it had a small spot of spoiling but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Another one is a few days from size and hopefully will turn red.

Zucchini-

We have had about 5-6 zucchini harvested. We received some from friends who had bumper crops so we have had a good amount go through the kitchen. Even with the transplant issue a while back I’m proud of these two little plants!

Pumpkins and Squash-

Sadly our pumpkins are done growing. I believe a squash vine borer took over and we watched the vine shrivel up. Butternut squash is going well and has a few new little ones ready to grow and ripen.

Carrots-

Mr3 and I have had so much fun with the carrots. He gasps in excitement when we have picked them. They did much better in the raised bed than they did in the ground , as you’ll read next. We harvested the last of our spring planting this week and they have been very yummy!

Cucumbers-

The cukes just keep coming! We are averaging about 8-10 a week. Some are going into pickles but most we have been snacking on or making a side dish on hot days when we don’t want to have hot food.

Late planting crops-

After taking out the potatoes I plopped in some more seeds. Unfortunately an entire bed of a 3 rows of beets and 3 rows of carrots is only giving us three seedlings of each. Not sure what happened but I’ll tend those few and enjoy them when they are ready.

I put in some broccoli seeds and they are coming up nicely though something is snacking on the leaves of a couple and the plants are rather leggy.

I put in some kale and spinach last week and am excited to see quite a bit of growth for a fall harvest.

Flowers-

We have enjoyed the flowers of our garden very much. I put some sunflower seeds in a pot in the back yard and have so enjoyed watching them bloom as well as the birds enjoy their seeds. We will definitely be growing a larger plot of sunflowers next year.

The hydrangea I put in on Mothers day has been such a joy to watch grow. It came up strong, put on beautiful white blossoms and is now starting to turn pink as it’s variety “Strawberry Vanilla” promised.

I’ve saved a few seeds from foxglove and columbine and we are enlarging out front flower bed and plan to shift some plants around to make way for some different options next spring.

We’ve had a couple of gorgeous cooler days here in Maine. Love the comfort but know it means the garden will be changing in a new way with the cooler nights coming. I hope you are still seeing lots of growth and hopefully harvest in your garden! Thanks for reading!
